SNACKS : The students of 3X must be going through growth spurts! On many occasions, this week, I have heard from multiple students that they are still hungry following lunch, despite having eaten everything in their lunch bag. This is affecting, at times, a majority of the students in the class so I decided rather than write and send multiples notes home with individual students I would address the class as a whole.
Parents/Guardians, could you touch base with your child and ask them about their lunch (are they getting enough to eat, are they liking what is being put in their lunch, etc.) I also encourage you to invite your child to prepare their lunch with you! Many are ready to take on this responsibility, if they aren't doing so already.
I do keep extra snacks on hand in the classroom for situations where children are left feeling hungry or with little to no lunch/snacks. However, this supply has been running dry very quickly since our return in 2020 and because of the high demand on a daily basis I unfortunately cannot maintain it.
Thank you, thank you for all the support I get from home! :)

New to the homework bag: This evening your child is coming home with something new in the homework bag. After meeting with you all during parent-teacher interviews, it became evident that the spelling homework expectations were unclear. Many had questions about what words should be practiced during the week and what activities should be completed at home. In hopes of making things easy on parents and students I have sent home a black pouch ("la pochette"). Inside the pouch, your child has written down his/her six spelling words for this week. For homework, students are only expected to practice spelling the six words in the pouch. This can be done in many different ways so feel free to get creative! Happy spelling! :)

Here are some of the guidelines for the "party":
Note: Students will not have access to the wifi at the school as we are on a closed network. Therefore any games that require an internet connect will likely not work in the classroom. Please consider this when choosing what to send to school. Also don't forget to ensure electronics are charged! Thank you...and wish us luck!
- No School: Thursday, November 14th and Friday, November 15th due to the annual PEITF Convention.
- Class Party: On Wednesday, November 13th your child is invited to wear pajamas to school and, with parents permission, is permitted to bring an electronic from home to class. I will be honest, for years students have been asking about doing something like this and I have always been hesitant. Some students have done this successfully in the past and therefore I am willing to give it a try...I must have been really exhausted when I agreed to this Thursday afternoon. That being said, students will be permitted, for a specific block of time, to bring tech from home into the classroom. Those who are unable to bring tech from home will have access to a Chromebook so not to worry, your child will not miss out.
Here are some of the guidelines for the "party":
- All tech from home must remain in school bags at all times, with the exception of its use in the classroom. This includes the bus, outdoor play, etc.
- Students must have permission from their parents to bring any electronics to school.
- Any games played must be school appropriate.
- If needed, I will remove electronics from a child/children.
Note: Students will not have access to the wifi at the school as we are on a closed network. Therefore any games that require an internet connect will likely not work in the classroom. Please consider this when choosing what to send to school. Also don't forget to ensure electronics are charged! Thank you...and wish us luck!

- Parent-teacher interviews: A reminder that we have interviews this week so there will be no school on Friday. See you all this week!
- Halloween: On Friday, I allowed any candy that was brought in by students to be consumed throughout the day. This was followed up with a discussion in the afternoon about how these types of treats do not promote learning and that they therefore should not be part of our day in the classroom. I asked that students leave these treats at home (or at least in the school bag). Thank you for your understanding!
- Book fair: Students went to the library today to view the available books. On Wednesday, interested students can purchase books during our allotted time slot. The book fair will also be open throughout P-T interviews. Please ensure that all money sent in for book purchases is in a bag/envelope labeled with your child’s name.
- Library: Due to the Book Fair there will be no library book exchange this week. The regular library schedule will resume November 12th.
- Wintery weather: A reminder, as the temperature gets cooler, to make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the outdoors. An extra pair of mitts and socks in their backpack is always a good idea! Please label all clothing (coats, boots, mitts, etc.) It is much easier to get clothing back to its rightful owner that way. Many students also find the air in the classroom gets drier during this time, lip balm and hand cream, if needed, is encouraged but please remind your child not to share lip care products (…or hats). Thank you!

The class will also take part in the “Spooktacular” held in the gym at some point throughout the day. Students are not permitted to wear a mask or bring a weapon to school. I will provide a small snack and treat in the afternoon. I know some students might like to bring in Halloween candy or treat bags but we have friends in our class/building with food allergies which limit intake of certain food products, and I really wouldn’t want to spoil the day by having them feel left out. If you could please send in an extra drink to go with the afternoon snack that would be greatly appreciated!

List 1 and 2 were reviewed on Monday, and list 3 and 4 were reviewed on Tuesday. These should be practiced at home this week. On Friday, a full four-week word test will be given (24 words for grade 2; 28 words for grade 3). Please pay close attention to words that still causing difficulty for your child.
Library: Day 1, Wednesday October 23.

I need your help! Tomorrow the class will be starting an art project in class. For this project we need dinky cars and unfortunately I have none, neither at school or at home. I'm wondering if students, who have dinky cars at home, could please bring a few with them to school tomorrow to be used as examples/models for the class? I would need to keep them for approximately a week and then I will send them home with your child. Thank you so much for your help!

Homework: I changed the format of the homework portion on the blog. Rather than having daily homework posted I have posted the nightly homework expectation for the week all in one. Math for grade 3 changes from day to day and the specific exercises for each night have been posted under grade 3 homework.
*Ortho: There was some confusion with the spelling homework (ortho) that I would like to clarify. My apologies that this wasn't better explained! Each week night I ask that your child practice his/her spelling words. This can be done any way that your child pleases! The list for the week can be found in the duotang d'ortho. The activity sheets that follow the list are for work at school only! I hope this helps! As always, if things aren't going smoothly with homework one night please put it away and try again the following night. Homework should not be a struggle! If there are any questions please don't hesitate to contact me!
School Fundraiser: All orders are due this week. If you do not wish to order, please send back the package, thank you.
Thanksgiving Assembly: The students did a wonderful job during their concert on Thursday! Thank you to all families for their contributions for the "Drive Away Hunger" campaign. The school was able to gather a bunch of food to be donated to those in need.
Have a great week!

Thanksgiving was a theme in the class this past week. Because of this, the class and I had a great discussion about what we are thankful for. Your children came up with a list that included the fresh air we breath, the clean water we drink, the warm bed we sleep in at night, and the family and friends who love us... and these were only a few of the many examples provided by the class. Each of us have a lot that we can be thankful for and I am so grateful for all of the beautiful little souls who reminded me of this, this week!
Happy Thanksgiving!
This was a small portion of the gym that was decorated by some of the students for Thursday's concert.
Thank you to them for all of their help! The gym looked beautiful!

Thanksgiving Concert: Tomorrow is our in school Thanksgiving concert. This is a day only concert and therefore there will be no evening performance. That being said, any and all parents and family members that can make it are invited to come tomorrow afternoon. It's tricky to say exactly when the concert is set to begin because it is dependent on how quickly all classes can get down to the gym following little break but we are shooting for 1:35-1:45 pm to begin. Anyone attending the assembly will be asked to stand around the gym walls. A reminder to dress your child in FALL COLORS!! Hope to see you there!

• DFS Fundraising: Campaign brochures will go home today and fundraising wraps up on Tuesday, Oct.15 th (the day after Thanksgiving). When returning orders, please send in the top two fundraising forms – completely filled out - and the accompanying money. We need the student name and homeroom (3X Kayla Fraser) on each order form. You need to keep the back form so you’ll have a record of the deliveries you’ll need to make. If you place your order on-line, DO NOT submit the paper form as this will create a supplicate order.

Reminder: No School Friday, September 27th - PD Day
This Week:
- Terry Fox Run : The Terry Fox run will take place during the afternoon of September 26th. On Thursday, small donations can be taken to school for the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Research.
- Orange Shirt Day : On Monday September 30th we will have "Orange Shirt Day" at Sherwood. Orange Shirt day officially became a movement in 2013 despite it beginning in 1973 when six year old Phyllis Webstad, a First Nation girl, entered the St. Joseph Mission Residential School, outside of Williams Lake, BC. Young Phyllis was wearing a brand new orange shirt for her first day of school -- new clothes were a rare thing for a First Nation girl, especially growing up in her grandmother's care -- but the Mission oblates quickly stripped her of her new shirt and replaced it with the school's institutional uniform.
- PD Day, Friday, September 27th - No school for students

Welcome to 3X
I am very pleased to be your child’s teacher for the 2019-2020 school year. This year, our class is combined of 18 grade 2 and 3 French immersion students.
There are a few important things that I would like to mention prior to meeting you on September 19 for Meet the Teacher:
Kayla Fraser
There are a few important things that I would like to mention prior to meeting you on September 19 for Meet the Teacher:
- Please label all of your child’s belongings.
- The school is a Peanut and Nut Free zone. Although there are no serious allergies in the class, there are students in the school who are allergic. Please check food labels carefully before sending food to school.
- This year, I will be using a blog for homework, class communications and educational activities. You can find the class blog via the school website under “Teacher Blogs”.
- This duotang will be used for any forms to be signed, communication between home and school, etc.
- “Meet the Teacher” night will be a bit different this year. On Thursday, September 19th, the whole family is invited to a BBQ at 5:30pm. There will be other activities for children and “Meet the Teacher” will follow at 6:30pm.
- This week, it’s the parents/guardians that have the homework. There are many important forms to be signed. Please take the time to fill them out and send them back to school ASAP!
